From an early age Frost had a reputation for looking after the interests of the 'small man.'

He became mayor of Newport in 1836 and a Justice of the Peace... yet in 1839 he was found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to be hung drawn and quartered.

John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones had led Chartist protestors into Newport with dire consequences. Later in Monmouth gaol Frost is reported to have said, "I was not the man for such an undertaking, for the moment I saw blood flow, I became terrified and ran."

Record Book for Transported Convicts arriving in Tasmania on board the Mandarin 1840. This is an exciting new section of the Newport Past website. You will find the records for all the convicts arriving in 'Van Diemen's Land on the Mardarin - including John Frost, Zephaniah Williams, William Jones and the 'Birmingham Chartists' - Jeremiah Howell, Francis Roberts and John Jones. We have a searchable database with many details about the prisoners including: age, where born, previous occupation, where tried, offence and sentence. Also you are able to view the original pages from the record book which documented each prisoner's time until the end of sentence, being pardoned or death. And, the icing on the cake, for the prisoners tried at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court) we have links to the trial records!
