Local History

In addition to tithe maps, Newport Reference Library is home to an extensive and unique collection of local history material, including historical Ordnance Survey maps of Monmouthshire and Newport, street and telephone directories, electoral registers, local photographs & illustrations, special collections including the Chartist collection with special emphasis on the Newport uprising of 1839 and local newspapers including the only complete collection of the South Wales Argus in the world. Many of these resources are held on microfiche and microfilm.

Microfilm and microfiche readers can be booked in advance.

Newport community libraries also hold small collections of materials relating to the local area.
