British Restaurants Newport Corporation Token

Item reference number: 137

Token issued during the 1939-45 War by Newport Corporation for use in British Restaurants.

These plastic tokens varied in size being larger for adults than for children. According to Cox ('The Tokens, Checks, Metallic Tickets, Passes and Tallies of Wales 1800-1993') the colour of the check denoted which course it could be exchanged for: yellow - soup; red - meat; green - sweet and brown - coffee.
