E M EVANS Victoria Brewery NEWPORT.
The reverse is countermarked with a 1.
This is one of a small number of similar tokens found on the bank of the River Usk between Newport and Caerleon by a metal detectorist. Others had different numerals between 1 and 10.
E.M. Evans was the proprietor in 1886 when the brewery was at 16 Bridge Street.
In 1901 the brewery was at 42 Bridge Street near the railway bridge, it was then operated by the Crown Brewery Company (Pontypool).
