Margaret Sara Meggitt

Meggitt, Margaret Sara was born at Grantham, educated at Sheffield, and entered the teaching profession as an elementary teacher. Was married on 17th July, 1888, to Mr. George Teale Meggitt, formerly of Messrs. S. Meggitt and Sons, Sheffield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, glue manufacturers. Is the mother of one son and two daughters. The former is Lieut. Wm. Geoffrey Meggitt, M.C., of the Royal Air Force. Mrs. Megitt spent the early part of her married life in Mansfield, Notts., where she took an active interest in Liberal politics, the Women's Suffrage Movement, and the R.N.S.P.C.C., being largely instrumental in the formation of a local branch of the latter organisation. Mrs. Meggitt - who came to Newport in 1906 - joined the Labour Party in 1913, organising a local branch of the Nat. Fed. of Women Workers, of which she was secretary for four years. She was the first woman to sit on the Newport Trades and Labour Council, and during the war was assessor for Monmouthshire on the Munitions Tribunal, was secretary of the Newport Women's Emergency Corps, and a member of the Maindee Distress Committee. Mrs. Meggitt was elected a member of the Board of Guardians in April, 1919, and has been nominated by the Labour Party for the local Town Council; is a member of the Women's Sub-committee of the Local Advisory Committee (Ministry of Labour), and an Assessor of the Court of Referees. Also an executive member of the Monmouthshire Committee of the National Council for the Unmarried Mother and her Child. Residence: The Cliff, Eveswell Park, Maindee.
