Munitions Creche

Many thanks to Steve Maguire who sent the following information about the Creche:

In 1917 Gertrude Mary Bailey, wife of C H Bailey, established the Munition Workers' Creche in Alexandra Road Newport. As well as funding the project, Mrs. Bailey took an active part in the organisation and selection of equipment for the Creche which was established so that mothers who were required to support the war effort, while at the same time supplementing the family income, could ensure that their children were well looked after whilst they were at work at the various munition sites around Newport.
