Newport High School, Bettws, 1973

Photo reference number: 2295

Newport High School was originally sited at Queens Hill near the centre of Newport. In 1967 a competition was held for architects to design a new school to be constructed on a large site at Bettws, outside the town. The winning design, from 165 entries, was built in 1972 only to be demolished in 2009 after a new school was built on the site.

This photo comes from a report in the Design magazine, no. 292, April 1973. See the links below to more photographs and the full text.

Design magazine photo description:

Malpas Brook, straightened into a canal, takes rainwater from the school's flat roof. At the eastern end it's been widened into a canoeing pool. Note rugged Forticrete blockwork and scaffolding tube handrails.
