One of the two 35 horse-power electric motors which pull the platform to and fro across the river. The motors are controlled from the bridge of the gondola and can also be controlled from the motor house. The electric supply can be taken from either side of the river - hence if there is a power cut on one side the motors can still be operated with power from the other side. Should there be a problem with one of the motors, the bridge can be operated using just one of them.
