On Saturday September 29th 1945 'Monty' visited Newport and was made the 11th Freeman of the town. This photo was taken in Commercial Street. Newport's Mayor, George Armstead, met Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery at the railway station and walked with him through the town. After lunch at the Kings Head 'Monty' was duly enrolled as the 11th Freeman of Newport at the Great Central Hall.
Behind the crowd we can see Griffiths & Sons, tailors and general outfitters, 147 Commercial Street; and the Talbot Hotel, 148 Commercial Street.
