The Mayor Of Newport
Councillor WILLIAM ELLIS ROBERTSON, Mayor of Newport 1924-5, was born at Newcastle, New South Wales, in 1868, but when a child was brought to England, where he was educated at Liverpool Institute and School of Art, and later he completed his education at Southport. After spending 10 years in the Merchant Service, he settled in Newport in 1892, and was elected to the Town Council in 1913 as a member for the Maindee Ward. He is Chairman of the Parks and Cemeteries Committees, also Deputy-chairman of the Technical College and Institute Committee. In 1920 he was appointed as the Council's representative on the South Wales and Monmouthshire Area Joint Industrial Council Electricity Supply, and the District Joint Board (Electricity Supply), and in 1921 he served as Chairman on both these bodies. He is Hon. Treasurer of the Newport Chamber of Trade, a post he has held since its inception.
