Wartime Presentation by Newport Fire Service To Woolaston House

Jennifer Banks kindly sent us this photograph. Her father, Harry Knight, is standing to the left of the bookcase (as we look at it). He was a member of Newport Fire Service (NFS) during the Second World War. The picture had remained in its original frame until recently. When it was removed a typed notice was found behind it, this began:
"WOUNDED SOLDIERS' FUND NFS PERSONNEL, NEWPORT
With the opening of the Western Front a greater effort than ever is required in order that comforts may be provided for the wounded men at Wooloston House.
The gifts from NFS Personnel in the past have been greatly appreciated, and after making enquiries I find that these men are badly in need of good reading matter.
It has been proposed that we install a library of One Hundred Books, in a Bookcase, at Wooloston House, at an appropriate cost of £25:0:0. Each book will bear a lable to the effect that it has been provided by NFS Personnel, Newport, and the Bookcase will carry a small engraved brass plate.
This is the sort of thing the Boys want!! - Please don't keep them waiting... so please give generously (to the fund) this time..."

Norman Stevens has told us that the gentleman in the centre with crossed hands is Alderman Casey, JP, chairman of the Watch Committee, Newport Co. Borough.
Rhonda Tinkham has contacted us to say the man to the right of the bookcase, standing between it and the sister, is her grandfather - George Harold Scott.
