HJ Strong was Herbert James Strong a wholesale brush merchant originally from Bridpole in Dorset. His wife was Fanny and in 1901 they had four children, all boys: Augustus, Harold, Cyril and Gordon. The family lived 49, St Edward Street, Newport.

In 1911 the family included a girl, Dorothy, and they were living at 3 Severn Terrace.

In 1939 Herbert was a brush maker and lived in Bryngwyn Road.
