Samuel Wainwright's Umbrella and Cutlery Shop

Photo reference number: 2137

Photo kindly sent to us by Michael Jones.

Centre picture is Samuel Wainwright (Michael's 2nd great grandfather, see note below). He moved to Newport some time between 1850 and 1860. At first he worked as a rope maker but by the 1881 census he had become a 'working cutler' like his step father, George Knight. He had a shop in Dolphin Street and by 1891 it was an umbrella and cutlery shop. By 1892 he had moved to Dock Street (near the Potters Arms) where his umbrella and cutlery business continued until around 1907.

Also in the photo (from left) are: Rhoda, Samuel's wife; Ann Knight, Samuel's mother, and three of his daughters, Louisa, Elizabeth and Sophia.

Ann Knight died in 1890 so this is probably Samuel's shop in Dolphin Street.

Note: the man centre picture could be Samuel's step-father, George Knight.
