Bailey, Mrs. C. H. was born in Sunderland, and is the daughter of the late Captain James Buchanan. A brief period of her early life was spent at Sydney, Nova Scotia, but for the most part she lived in London prior to her coming to Newport in 1895. Her late husband was known the world over as the proprietor of the Tyne Engine Works, he having contributed in no small degree to placing Newport in the front rank of the ship repairing industry. Mrs. Bailey is regarded as one of the successful business women of the county, and in conjunction with her partner - Mr. William Graham - she continues to carry on the undertaking both here, at Barry Dock and Cardiff, with which the name of C. H. Bailey is so closely associated in the engineering world. In all matters of charity Mrs. Bailey is regarded as La Grande Dame of the place. Her purse is ever open to help all good works, whilst special mention may be made of the generous assistance which she has rendered to the Royal Gwent Hospital. As chairman of the Mon. Prisoners of War Committee Mrs. Bailey has taken a deep and practical interest in the welfare of the gallant men from this county who were in captivity in Germany. In the matter of organising and equipping the munition workers' creche Mrs. Bailey took an active part, mothers who found it necessary to become wage earners thereby obtaining a most welcome boon. The Maternity Nurses' Home in Herbert Street is another of the local institutions which owes its flourishing condition largely to the munificence of the subject of these notes. In 1918 Mrs. Bailey was created Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
