The train is a sign of the changing times, as is the recently (1961) installed modern signalling and the abandoned Newport East Box. The locomotive is Collett '7240' class 2-8-2T No. 7249, rebuilt 11/38 from Churchward '4200' class 2-8-0T No. 4209 (built 2/1912) and lasting until 6/65).
