Photo kindly sent to us by Hilary Swan. Her grandfather George Thomas is 6th from the right in the middle row. George Allman Thomas joined the police force in 1919 and became a sergeant March 28th 1935. He was also a fully qualified ambulance man, and was commended by Newport District Coroner for his action in a drowning case. During the war he served in the Royal Navy for three years. He retired in the 1950s.
So we can date the photo to sometime between 1935 and the 1950s.
The original photo is very clear and many of the collar numbers are clear enough to read. Does anyone have a list of Newport Police Officers and their collar numbers? Can anyone supply any information about the photo? Is it just Newport Police? This seems unlikely as during the period 1935 - 1955 there were only 17 to 20 sergeants in Newport police and there are at least 24 in this picture.
