Councillor EDWARD DAVIES, j.p., was born at Newport, on the 17th September, 1849, and married in 1869 Miss Annie Thomas, aunt of the Right Honourable J. H. Thomas, P.C., M.P., Member for Derby.
Councillor Davies was elected uncontested as a member of the Council for the Tredegar Ward in 1908, and has held his seat without opposition since that date. He is by virtue of his office a member of all Corporation Committees, and is also Chairman of the Parks and Cemeteries Committee. He was placed on the Commission of the Peace for the Borough in 1912.
Councillor Davies is a Churchman, and has been an Officer of St. Paul's Church for over 30 years. He has been a prominent worker in the cause of temperance, and has been a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites since 1878, holding the office of Treasurer of the "Star of Usk" Tent for the past 32 years, and also being a Past District Chief Ruler.
He is a Trades Unionist, and possesses the diploma of the Newport and District Operative Plasterers and Slaters' Society for over fifty years continued membership.
Councillor Davies has living three sons and one daughter - Mrs. Alfred Lewis - who holds the office of Mayoress during her father's Mayoralty.
