A brief history of the long running Newport business:

George Taylor was born in Shapwick, Somerset, and served his apprenticeship in Bristol in the drapery trade. He moved to Newport and together with Henry Paradise, set up business in the High Street in 1834. After 6 years of operating as Taylor and Paradise the partnership ended and George continued to run the shop at 43 High Street.
In 1876 George retired and the business became Taylor and Gait. It was run by one of George's sons, Edward, his elder daughter, Ellen, and her husband Arthur Gait.
Following the death of Arthur Gait in 1906 Edward Taylor ran the shop with two of his sons, Edward Roy Taylor and Lionel Frederick Taylor. In 1910 the title of the firm was E. G. Taylor and Sons. It was converted into a Private Limited Company in 1920.
The business celebrated its centenary in 1934 and continued to run for a further 32 years.
