Searle, Alfred was born at Sidmouth, Devon, 25th March, 1861. Was educated at Newton Abbot College and the Crypt School, Gloucester, till the age of 14, and then at Cheltenham College until 18 (First Class, Classical Department.) He then entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1882 with Second Class Honours, and LL.B. in 1883. Ran level with Rawlinson, K. C., for the Trinity Law Prizes and divided them with him; was 9th in order of merit in Law Tripos (Honours) Final Schools. Played in Cambridge football (Rugby) reserves and for Old Cheltonians as half-back, also for Newport in Will Phillips' team with C. H. Newman. Was articled to Mr. W. J. Lloyd when the firm was Davis and Lloyd, and remained in that office for eleven years. Was admitted as solicitor in 1887, is a Commissioner for Oaths, and has for many years now been in practice in Newport. As a footballer and cricketer Mr. Searle has been a great player in the past, and also in lawn tennis, in which latter he represented Newport for a considerable period. Is one of the hon. secretaries of the Newport and County Piscatorial Society. Lay reader under the Bishop of Llandaff, hon. secretary to the Religious Tract Society, hon. secretary (for over eighteen years) to the Maindee Curacy Fund, and has been for over 25 years a Sunday school teacher. He was formerly Conservative secretary for Maindee, but does not now take an active part in politics. In April, 1912, he married Miss Matthews, of Cirencester, whose father was estate agent for the late Earl Bathurst. Has taken a lively interest in the work of the Newport Naval Brigade - now Naval Cadets - (of which he is commander) affiliated to the Admiralty as Naval Reserves.
