Charles Frederick Ward

Ward, Charles Frederick was born at West Bromwich, educated at Tettenhall College, Staffordshire, matric. London University, articled to Mr. William Henman. F.R.I.B.A., of Birmingham. He then had four years' London experience with leading architects and surveyors, and, later, held an important appointment on the architectural staff of the London County Council. In 1904 he was appointed borough architect to the Newport Corporation, which position he still holds. Mr. Ward is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and a Member of the Institution of Municipal and County Engineers. The Technical Institute in Clarence place, the Higher Elementary School on Stow hill, the Carnegie Public Library in Corporation road, the Pillgwenlly Police Station, and the alterations and additions to the Intermediate School and other scholastic buildings throughout the town are amongst the many public edifices designed by him and carried out under his supervision. He has now in hand the local Town Planning Schemes and Housing Scheme for the erection of 4,000 houses, whilst his designs for a new civic centre for Newport, including Town Hall, Assize Courts, and Central Police Station, are under consideration. During the war, Mr. Ward took over the duties of the Borough Engineer, who went on active service. Mr. Ward is a Mason, was Worshipful Master of the Isca Lodge, 1919, and Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. Address: Town Hall. Tel. 3111. Residence: 12 Fields Park avenue. Tel. 3393.
