Jones, Alfred Thomas was born at Llandenny, Monmouthshire, in 1856, educated at the Raglan National Schools, and after assisting his father in his business for some time, spent two years as a grocer's assistant, Subsequently he entered the Baptist ministry, and for 40 years laboured in Newport as the pastor of the Duckpool road Baptist Church. During that period his church became widely known as a centre of earnest evangelical effort, and although Mr. Jones retired from his pastorate in 1916, it has apparently only been in order to continue his work in a wider field, and give to other towns and varying denominations the benefit of his ministrations. He is well known and popular as a lecturer, not only in Wales, but in London, Bristol, and places in the West, so that his preaching and other public work find his apparently unquenchable activities fully engaged on Sundays and week days. Mr. Jones has been a guardian of the Newport Union for 27 years. He has been president of the Monmouthshire English Baptist Association, Newport Sunday School Union, Newport Temperance Society, and is honorary secretary of the Newport Band of Hope Union. Residence: Pen-y-Bryn, Fields road.
