Edward Patrick Lawlor

Lawlor, Edward Patrick was born in Birmingham in 1870, and is a son of Patrick Lawlor of that place. He was educated at St. Joseph's, Nechell's, and after leaving school he was apprenticed to the furniture business with Morris and Nortons, Birmingham - the fire at whose premises, 13th January, 1887, was the largest conflagration ever witnessed in that locality. Whilst with this firm Mr. Lawlor had the charge of the alterations to Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's residence at Highbury, on the occasion of his marriage to Miss Endacott. Mr. Lawlor subsequently went to London, and after a useful metropolitan and provincial experience came to Newport to take up an important position with one of our local firms. In the year 1903 Mr. Lawlor commenced business here on his own account as a complete house, office and hotel furnisher, and is today managing director of E. P. Lawlor, Ltd., complete house, office and hotel furnishers. He is consul for the Republic of Salvador. He sits on the Newport Town Council, representing the Central Ward, and is a member of the Parliamentary, Wages and Salaries, Housing, Education. Health, Parks and Cemeteries, Market and Baths, and Fuel and Lighting Committees. Chairman of the L.T.A.C. for training disabled soldiers and sailors in cabinet making and upholstery. He is an active member of the Newport Chamber of Commerce, Newport Chamber of Trade, the Newport Development Association, and a member of the Executive Council of each body. Address: 19 High street.
