D. J. Evans

Evans, D. J. was born in Adeline street, Newport, in 1884, and educated locally. In early days he was apprenticed to the butchering, and when he was 20 years of age he opened business on his own account. He is to-day the proprietor of the meat purveying business at 38 Alexandra road, which is one of the largest shipping butchering businesses in the port. He is also a farmer on a large scale at Christchurch. In November, 1913, he was elected as one of the representatives of the Alexandra Ward on the Newport Town Council, and sits on the Health and the various sub-committees, Visiting Committee, Mental Deficiency Committee, Parks and Cemeteries Committee, deputy-chairman Small Holdings Committee, Markets and Baths Committee, and the V.D. Committee; member of Newport Board of Guardians since the early part of 1919, member of Magor District Council, chairman of Christchurch Parish Council, member of the local Farmers' Union, president of Newport Dairymen's Association, chairman of Newport Shipping Butchers' Association, and a member of the Bristol Channel Shipping Butchers' Association. As shewing his belief in the possibilities of Newport as a centre of industry, he has recently inaugurated a new industry in the shape of the Newport Bacon and Bye-products Co., who have taken over the premises of the old Pill Baths, which are being adapted and fitted up for the manufacture of all kinds of small goods, bacon and ham curing, etc. Is married to Miss Ray, and is the father of four children.
