John Henry Williams, Mayor of Newport 1910 - 1911

Williams, John Henry was born at Picton Castle Estate, near Haverfordwest, in 1868, and was apprenticed to the grocery business in the market Town of Whitland. More than 30 years ago he came to Newport and obtained a useful experience with one of the leading provision merchants in this town, and subsequently commenced business here on his own account as a baker, grocer, etc. He is today the managing director of Messrs. J. H. Williams & Son Ltd., grocers and provision merchants, Newport. In 1895 he was first elected a member of the Newport Town Council in representation of the old Maindee Ward, and, with a short interval, has been a member of the Corporation ever since. He sits today as one of the councillors representing the Liswerry Ward. On the 9th November, 1910, Mr. Williams was chosen as mayor of the County Borough of Newport for the ensuing twelve months, in succession to Mr. William Blackburn, also appointed to the Council in the same year and representing the same ward. In January, 1887. he married Miriam Maie, the daughter of Mr. C. J. Evans, Mus. Doc., of Guildford, Surrey, and is the father of one son, who is associated with the active management of the business.
