The house off Bassaleg Road was built for Charles Henry Bailey. His widow, Gertrude, continued to live there after his death. The house was sold to Sir John Cecil Davies - and his widow, Lady Emma, gave the house (minus the gardens) to the Guardians of the Poor as a home for delicate children. Our photo dates to this period.
The house later was owned by Newport Council. In 1996 developers were fined £200000 for part demolishing the listed building.
