Mark Mordey, Mayor of Newport 1889 - 1890

Mordey, Mark was born in Newport. He is a son of Mr. W. M. Mordey, of Sunderland, and in early life was apprenticed to the shipwright and shipbuilding trade in the same yard which he, in company with his partner. Mr. J. H. Carney, afterwards acquired. He is one of the best-known men in South Wales, and has had a life-long connection with the ship repairing industry. Mr. Mordey entered the Town Council in 1883, and was Mayor of the Borough for the year ending November, 1890. He is now an alderman of the Council, chairman of the Watch Committee, a member of the Newport Harbour Commission, chairman of the Harbour Works Committee, a member of the Institute of Naval Architects, and sits as a magistrate both for the Borough of Newport and the County of Monmouth. He is a representative of the Town Council on the Board of the Pilotage Commissioners, and was president of the Newport Chamber of Commerce Incorporated in the year 1890.
