Newport High Street Station, with Down freight passing - 14 Aug 1963

Photo reference number: 2394

View NE, towards Maindee and everywhere north, east, and south; ex-GWR South Wales main line, Eastern and Western Valleys, etc. The station had been radically re-arranged in 1961, so this Down Class F is not running 'wrong line' because the former Up Main Platform line is now the Down Main. The locomotive is Churchward '4200' 2-8-0T No. 4277, which was built 4/20 and withdrawn 6/64 but was preserved. It worked on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway, but is now on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, named 'Hercules'. (See also, e.g. ST3088 : Newport High Street Station, with Up freight running through).
