A military funeral accompanied the interment in St Woolos of Surgeon - Major R.J. Patton following his operation on somebody else at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport late in 1907.
This gentlemen who had been born in India in 1862 and had gained his doctorate at Edinburgh University was operating on a patient suffering from appedicitis when the scalpel slipped.
The cut became infected and shortly afterwards the doctor who had saved another himself died.
