From "The Chartist Riots At Newport" W N Johns, 1889

John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones were imprisoned here.
The gallows were built on the roof of the gatehouse within earshot of the condemned men.

The gaol was closed in 1869 and the prisoners transferred to the new gaol in Usk.
It was demolished in 1884.
