The Top Of High Street In The 1890s

Photo reference number: 2318

It's 11.35 on a cold morning, the road still has a dusting of snow.

Among the buildings to the left are the 'Old Post Office', the Corn Exchange, Singer's (sewing machines) and Dutfield And Frost (agricultural implement agents). To the right we can see Fennell's (fishmongers poulterers etc.) and The King's Head Hotel.

In the distance the castle is just visible.

This is from an old original Francis Frith photograph.
